Anthropic grants safety watchdog 'employee-like' access
The artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has granted an external evaluator “employee-like access” to its models and systems to assess catastrophic risks. The move makes good on a September pledge by CEO Dario Amodei, which drew support from rivals at OpenAI and SpaceX, to embed third-party auditors inside leading AI labs.
The non-profit watchdog, METR, now has a team embedded in Anthropic’s offices with access to its hardware. The company is also working with a firm named SecureBio to review biological weapon risks, and has a partnership with Accenture where each has committed at least $1 billion to set up new safeguards. METR is funded by philanthropic organisations and government bodies, including the UK’s AI Security Institute.
The measures come as Anthropic reportedly prepares for an initial public offering at a valuation of over $2 trillion, and has devoted significant parts of recent investor presentations to its safety practices. The company compared the voluntary oversight to how third parties audit banks, arguing that every frontier AI developer should do the same.
