Bangladesh not told of citizens' execution in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia executed a Bangladeshi man and woman in Mecca last Wednesday without informing the Bangladeshi government beforehand. According to the Saudi interior ministry, the two were convicted of committing an “indecent act” inside a mosque. Bangladesh’s state minister for foreign affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, said her government has now formally requested more details on the case.

The sentence was delivered under “tazir,” a provision in Islamic law that leaves punishment to a judge’s discretion. While the executed pair were on a list of prisoners shared with Bangladesh, the document reportedly did not indicate they faced a death sentence. The news has caused concern in Bangladesh, from which over three million citizens work in Saudi Arabia. Amnesty International reports the kingdom has executed around 100 people this year.

The incident is not without precedent; eight Bangladeshi men were publicly executed in Riyadh in 2011. However, it contrasts with a case earlier this month where Saudi Arabia overturned a death sentence for a Sri Lankan man convicted of blasphemy, a reversal that followed public outcry and diplomatic efforts from his home country.
