Sudan drone strikes kill dozens as UN decries civilian toll

A wave of drone strikes across Sudan killed at least 19 people, including 10 children, over the weekend. On Monday, a separate attack on a busy market in Abyei injured another 19 people. The strikes targeted multiple locations, including the capital, Khartoum, and areas across West Darfur, South Darfur, and North Kordofan states.

The UN condemned the attacks, noting the particular danger to aid workers. Since the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces began in April 2023, 25 Sudanese Red Crescent volunteers have been killed on duty. The violence compounds a humanitarian crisis where 20 million people face acute hunger.

UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo urged external actors to stop fuelling the conflict. Despite the escalating needs, Sudan’s humanitarian response plan is just over 43% funded.
