Ukraine's Starlink access restored after US political dispute
Ukraine’s military has regained full access to the Starlink satellite network after days of restricted service, according to its defence minister, Yevhenii Khmara. Speeds of over 400km/h are now possible, restoring a critical capability for piloting fast-moving drones. The network, which uses 10,000 low-Earth-orbit satellites, had been limited to 161km/h, causing drones to lose their connection.
The disruption stemmed from a diplomatic row. Kyiv accused US President Donald Trump of telling Elon Musk, the network's owner, to impose the limits amid a dispute over Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure. Mr Trump has criticised the attacks, claiming they raise global fuel prices, and recently waived some sanctions to import Russian diesel into the US.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the US had also threatened to withdraw intelligence sharing if the strikes continued. For his part, Mr Trump denied ordering the Starlink restrictions before adding that Mr Musk had “put it back”.
