New 'Volta' malware uses AI to auto-profile victims

Security researchers at Cisco Talos have identified a new strain of malware, 'Volta-Autodoxer,' that uses commercial AI to automate the analysis of stolen data. The software casts a wide net, collecting everything from login credentials and credit card numbers to Discord sessions and UberEats receipts to build a comprehensive profile of its victims.

Once data is collected, Volta uses a service called OpenRouter to send it to Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6 model for processing. Anticipating that AI safety guardrails might block its requests, the malware’s creators built in fallbacks. If Claude refuses, it automatically tries a Chinese model, Moonshot AI Kimi K2, and then Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash.

The malware includes a 240-word prompt instructing the AI to act as a 'forensic intelligence analyst' and produce a dossier on the target, including their financial 'worth' and operational security. The prompt directs the AI to 'connect dots across fields' and to 'Go deep, not wide,' automating intelligence work previously done by human hackers.
