Guinea-Bissau's military rulers postpone national elections
Guinea-Bissau has indefinitely postponed parliamentary and presidential elections that were scheduled for December 6th, leaving the country's return to civilian rule in doubt. The military, led by General Horta N'Tam, seized power in November 2025, halting the electoral process just after citizens had voted but before official results were announced.
The postponement follows several moves by the transitional government to consolidate its authority. In a referendum on August 30th, 70% of voters approved constitutional amendments that expand presidential powers and reduce the size of parliament from 102 seats to 65. Mediation efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have so far failed to produce a solution.
The head of the main opposition party, Domingos Simoes Pereira, was released from detention in July and allowed to travel to Portugal for medical treatment. While the national vote is now on hold, the transitional government has announced plans to hold local elections in 2027.
